CONTEMPORARY HISTORY – PAWEŁ SMOLEŃSKI http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/contemporary-history-pawel-smolenski/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/contemporary-history-pawel-smolenski/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 20:36:47 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2210 Poland, Ukraine, Israel, Iraq. Paweł Smoleński writes down history that is happening “now,” in front of our eyes. In his reportage books he takes on difficult topics and gives voice to those who are not afraid to talk about them out loud. To paint the picture of a nation, the author reaches into the fate of specific people, to the individual – often painful – experience: the meeting of man and History.

Paweł Smoleński | Reporter, journalist, since 1989 has been writing for “Gazeta Wyborcza,” before that has cooperated with samizdat magazines. Winner of the Polish-Ukrainian Reconciliation Award 2003 for his book “Pochówek dla rezuna,” and of the Kurt Schork Award for his pieces on Iraq. In 2006 also received the Beata Pawlak Award for his collection of reportages “Izrael już nie frunie.” In 2012 he received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

There, he took up painting and writing. He made a living by drawing, painting, designing. Wishing to familiarise our guests with the festival patron’s creative work, we have planned an exhibition of drawings by Zygmunt Haupt. It will be held at the Stanisław Gabryel Municipal Public Library until October 31st 2015. The works are from the collections of the writer’s son – Arthur Haupt.

Zygmunt Haupt: this overseas writer was read chiefly by American emigrants, in France, and in the UK. The excellent writing skill of a military journalist, the sharp mind of an artist painter, student of architecture and science make the film an unusual record of a world long gone. It is an homage to the unjustly forgotten author of “Pierścień z papieru,” architectural sketches, landscapes of Volhynia and Podolia, as well as the chronicler of episodes of the most recent Polish history. Works by Zygmunt Haupt evoked both the admiration of Józef Czapski and the open aversion manifested by Czesław Miłosz. A master of short form, an expert on mood and accurate commentary, Haupt made a living as a journalist for “Voice of America” and as an editor of the “Ameryka” magazine. A soldier under general Maczek, he loved horses. This motif and the most interesting stylistic tropes appear in the interpretations from philologists captivated by Haupt’s work: Aleksander Madyda and Krzysztof Rutkowski. Andrzej Stasiuk also reveals his fascination with the film’s protagonist, as well as inspiration drawn from Haupt’s writing. The excerpts of prose mentioned by the participants of the talk about Haupt are read by Wojciech Wysocki.

FROM POLAND TO POLAND – MICHAŁ OLSZEWSKI http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/from-poland-to-poland-michal-olszewski/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/from-poland-to-poland-michal-olszewski/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 20:27:34 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2202 Michał Olszewski either travels all around Poland, or goes deep within, showing what is being hidden and denied. “Zapiski na biletach” portray Poland as a country that is unfinished, cracked, boiling with dangerous energy. In his book “Chwalcie łąki umajone” Olszewski builds a geographical and mental landscape of early 21st century. The author unveils provincialism as the core of our country – in the good and bad meaning of this word. In the recently published reportages “Najlepsze buty na świecie” (2014) Poland is presented as a double country: there are dramatic events taking place under the cover of the little stabilisation. This is the kind of Poland we wish to forget as soon as possible.

Michał Olszewski | Journalist, writer of prose. He used to write for the Cracow edition of “Gazeta Wyborcza,” cooperates with “Tygodnik Powszechny.” He writes mainly about Polish space and social changes after 1989. Received the Kapuściński Award, and the 2014 “Wawrzyn” literary prize of Warmia and Masuria for his reportage collection “Najlepsze buty na świecie.”

The author is a hyper-attentive traveller who collects the smallest impressions, thoughts, details. What is individual, what is seen, is then elevated to the level of reflection that is universal and of philosophical weight.

Krzysztof Środa | Writer, translator, historian of philosophy. Worked for the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences PAN (doctoral thesis on Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology). Author of “Niejasna sytuacja na kontynencie,” “Projekt handlu kabardyńskimi końmi,” “Podróż do Armenii i innych krajów.” Won the Gdynia Literary Prize in the “Essay” category.

An attempt to approach not so much the author’s creative work, but the author himself. His character, personality traits, and the experiences that shaped this personality.

“Not much is known about Zygmunt Haupt. We want to know more, but where can we get the information from? Genuine information. Case studies, limited and arid, are somehow “deprived of the human.” Who was this Haupt? It would be best to ask him in person and to look at him a little. That is impossible; there is, however, someone who can say more about Haupt. Differently.” | Antoni Ferency, director

In “Angole” the author gives voice to the “Polish invaders” of the Isles, coming from all social groups. She asks how Polish intelligentsia, labourers, small business owners, students, and the unemployed see the country they have entered.

Ewa Winnicka | Studied journalism and American studies at the University of Warsaw. Co-author of several documentary film scripts. Honoured twice with the Grand Press Award for written pieces on social topics. Received the “Okulary Równości” – an award promoting the fight against exclusion. He portrays Stettin – a city that needs to cut itself off from its German identity and be born anew as Szczecin. Meeting with the writer will be a starting point for a discussion on controversies connected with the problem of the borderlands, city borders, and the arbitrary changes brought by two great wars.

A MEETING WITH ZYGMUNT HAUPT – JERZY TRELA http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/a-meeting-with-zygmunt-haupt-jerzy-trela/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/a-meeting-with-zygmunt-haupt-jerzy-trela/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 20:19:23 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2190 We offer to the festival viewers a unique meeting with… Zygmunt Haupt. We invite them to readings of stories by “the greatest of the inequitably forgotten” Polish writers, which will be interpreted by:

Jerzy Trela | Actor, pedagogue. After graduating from PWST in Cracow, he got involved with the Stary Theatre, performing the role of Philip in “Król Mięsopust” (directed by B. Hussakowski, 1970). While cooperating with many theatres in Warsaw (National, Drama, Na Woli, Ateneum, Polonia) and in Cracow (STU, Ludowy, Juliusz Słowacki), he still remains faithful to the Stary Theatre scene and team. Jerzy Trela is an artist of a great talent and unlimited possibilities. Several dozen roles created in the Stary Theatre fit squarely within the scene’s postwar history. His acting personality has been shaped by creations such as Gustaw-Konrad in “Dziady” and Konrad in “Wyzwolenie.” He learned the craft of acting while working under Jerzy Jarocki’s supervision (“Szewcy,” “Wiśniowy sad,” “Rewizor,” “Życie jest snem,” “Ślub,” “Faust”), who spotted in his acting his characteristic traits: the perspective, the auto-irony, and the sense of the absurd. Jerzy Trela has also worked with Andrzej Wajda (“Tragiczna historia Hamleta księcia Danii,” “Zemsta,” “Wesele”), Jerzy Grzegorzewski (“Wesele,” “Tak zwana ludzkość w obłędzie,” “Dziady – XII improwizacji”), Krystian Lupa (“Powrót Odysa,” “Lunatycy”), Mikołaj Grabowski (“Irydion,” “Tango Gombrowicz,” “Wyzwolenie”), Kazimierz Kutz (“Damy i huzary,” “Pieszo”), Piotr Cieplak (“Król umiera, czyli ceremonie”). A laureate of many drama, film and television prizes, Jerzy Trela has been for many years a professor at PWST in Cracow. In 2010 he was awarded the Mistrz Mowy Polskiej title and in 2011 honoured with a Commander Cross with an Order of Polonia Restituta Star.

ZYGMUNT HAUPT. MYSTICISM – MANNERISM – MODERNISM http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/zygmunt-haupt-mysticism-mannerism-modernism/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/zygmunt-haupt-mysticism-mannerism-modernism/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 20:17:49 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2188 Zygmunt Haupt was a particular author, a writer akin to none other. He had no masters, no pupils, no epigones. In spite of this, literary theory seeks more and more names, more “isms” to describe him, classify him, name him. The goal of the meetings is to take on this challenge and simultaneously point to those characteristics of Haupt’s work which make him resist any classification. What will also be discussed is whether Haupt ought to be considered a forgotten writer or an underestimated one.

LABORATORIUM PIEŚNI http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/laboratorium-piesni-3/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/laboratorium-piesni-3/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 20:16:34 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2186 The group uses traditional, polyphonic singing. They perform Ukrainian, Balkan, Polish, and Belarussian songs, as well as Georgian and Scandinavian ones, and many other. They sing the songs of the world a cappella, as well as with shaman drums and other ethnic instruments (such as the shruti box, bells, percussion, flute, kalimba, bowl, gong), introducing into traditional songs a new ground for vocal improvisation, often intuitive, wild, feminine, inspired by the sounds of nature. The source material undergoes a journey of sorts: the songs are usually brought from different regions of Poland, Europe, and the world by group members, then they are being worked on during a workshop process and on rehearsals to finally get its new shape – one that is traditional or one that is enriched, re-arranged. The band has received the Triton Award for the greatest artistic personality of the Festival at Fama (Świnoujście).

A band of female singers from Tricity, performing in their current constellation since 2013. Laboratorium Pieśni, apart from singing, also conducts field research in order to find new-old music (research conducted until now: Albania – polyphonic songs, Kashubia – funeral songs, Lower Silesia – rituals of carol singers). The group also creates theatre performances, where through traditional songs they tell stories about vanishing rites. The group’s founders – Alina Jurczyszyn, who graduated from the “Gardzienice” Academy for Theatre Practices, and Kamila Bigus, who graduated from the Academy of Music in Gdańsk – are realising the “Akademia Laboratorium Pieśni” project at the University of Gdańsk, and also conduct other traditional singing workshops in other locations. Laboratorium Pieśni is the co-organiser of the Etnowiosnowisko Spring and Music Festival.

He plucks out the history of the Kresy ancestors from the past, creating a universal image of longing and fear. It is also a record of a journey to metropolises, cities, villages, and hamlets, a story about wandering in the world, “with homes in the back of the head, and a feeling of homelessness.” Nowicki leaves Poland, takes more seemingly chaotic trips to understand, to revive, and to make peace with his ancestors. Unfortunately it turns out that the Kresy Arcadia which lasts in the memory suffers defeat when faced with reality.

Wojciech Nowicki | Writer, photography exhibitions curator, food critic. His book “Dno oka. Eseje o fotografii” got to the final stage of the 2011 Nike Literary Award. The 2013 “Salki” won the Gdynia Literary Prize in the “Essay” category.

Mister Robert has settled in a hut by the forest. Reading works by great scholars he discovers that even though spiders can be found quite often in literature, there is little truth about these creatures there. This is why he decides to write his own book, to – as he puts it – fill the ditch between humanistic sciences and natural science.

IN POLAND, SO NOWHERE – WALDEMAR BAWOŁEK http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/in-poland-so-nowhere-waldemar-bawolek/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/in-poland-so-nowhere-waldemar-bawolek/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:53:51 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2169 “To co obok” is a social panorama of contemporary Poland. In agreement with the title (“that, which is beside” – trans.), Waldemar Bawołek shows a spectrum of our reality, one filled with the fate of those who are struggling to stay on the level of the social minimum, living in the world of ostensible possibilities. The author writes about and for those who wonder about the essence of work, commitment, and love; about their disappointments, about the antinomies of consciousness, and the opposites upon which human existence is based. Here, realism trembles anxiously between onirism and an intellectual game, it explodes with vulgarities and reaches the boundaries of the purest absurdity, which can be seen, say, in the fate of the protagonists.

Waldemar Bawołek | Writer of prose. Winner of the “Nowy Nurt” and the Kurpisz Publishing House Competition, as well as of the Zielona Sowa Publishing House National Competition, thrice awarded the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship. Has published the following books: “Delectatio morosa” (1996), “Raz dokoła” (2005), “Humoreska” (2012), and “To co obok” (2014, nominated for the Gdynia Literary Prize).

In her last book “My, właściciele Teksasu” she presents the people who did not abandon their endeavours even if the circumstances were far from favourable, and draws a multidimensional panorama of the Polish People’s Republic in inconspicuous events. “Śród żywych duchów,” in contrast, shows the drama of Polish war heroes. The author collects stories, reveals the methods of eluding censorship and to gain information in the era of fear and distrust, and by connecting the tale of the times of terror and of late 80s she creates an extraordinary chronicle of the democratic breakthrough in Poland.

Małgorzata Szejnert | Journalist, co-founder of “Gazeta Wyborcza,” where she has been head of the reportage department for nearly 15 years. Mentor of the new generation of Polish reporters: Szczygieł, Tochman, Hugo-Bader. Honoured with the COGITO Public Media Award, nominated for the Nike Literary Award, the Gdynia Literary Award, and the Angelus Central European Literature Award.

CURRICULUM VITAE – ANGELIKA KUŹNIAK http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/curriculum-vitae-angelika-kuzniak-2/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/curriculum-vitae-angelika-kuzniak-2/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:40:16 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2165 The topics of Angelika Kuźniak’s books are other people’s lives; she also usually goes where typical short bios do not. In “Marlene,” the author writes a vobrant story, one that is rich and behind the scenes. She gives the reader a kaleidoscope that meshes together the impressions of photographers, the memories of friends, entries from the unpublished journals of Dietrich, and press articles. The protagonist of “Papusza” is a poet whose popularity garnered her fame, and soon became her curse. Being accused of breaking the tribal code ruined her life. For years she has been living in seclusion and contempt.

Angelika Kuźniak | Author of reportage stories “Marlene” (2009) and “Papusza” (2013). Has received the Grand Press Award three times, nominated for the Polish-German Journalism Award. In 2012 received the Barbara Łopieńska Award for her interview with Herta Müller.

Comments on everyday life, with a bit of irony and humour, are the main attractions of the reader’s trip into the night life. In “Kropka nad i” (2014) the author proves how keen an observer of reality he is – he lists its paradoxes, raises his doubts, points out the absurdities.

Bohdan Zadura | Poet, author of prose, translator, and literary critic. Graduated from Philosophy at the University of the University of Warsaw. NEW UKRAINE STUDIES – TARAS PROCHAŚKO http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/new-ukraine-studies-taras-prochasko/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/new-ukraine-studies-taras-prochasko/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:34:39 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2161 “Z tego można zrobić kilka opowieści” is a picture of Ukraine from the Soviet times. It is a story of one family against the background of the whole country’s history. An inspiring description of Galicia of the interwar period and during both wars. Whereas the Ukraine described in “W gazetach tego nie napiszą” is a territory locked by the Carpathian mountain massif, whose boundaries and regimes change at neck-breaking speeds. It is a riddle, a puzzle of countries, fronts, languages, a turbulent curve of occupation, liberation, and enslavement. It is also a botanical phenomenon, because the meadow of “green Ukraine” is home to several dozen completely different human species.

Taras Prochaśko | Journalist and author. One of the head representatives of the “Stanislau Phenomenon,” and one of the most interesting recent Ukrainian authors. His works attract the attention of critics, journalists, literature researchers, readers. He publishes short stories, novels, reportages.

MISHA ALPERIN SOLO http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/misha-alperin-solo-3/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/misha-alperin-solo-3/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:32:00 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2157 Misha Aleprin is on a constant musical journey. He draws from classical music, jazz, as well as traditional Eastern-European and Scandinavian music. His compositions are difficult to label in terms of genre. As critics note, Alperin owes an equal debt to Béla Bartók and Alfred Schnittke, as well as to Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. Alperin himself, however, although far from wanting to belittle the giants of American jazz, has special appreciation for its current European incarnations. The artist also goes back to his roots, drawing from the musical heritage of his family. He has, after all, debuted by playing at Jewish weddings, thus following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was a cantor and author of music at a synagogue in Bessarabia. Even though Alperin describes Jewish music as too tragicomic, the experiences of his youth allowed him to develop improvisational skills that he aims to pass onto his students, by conducting lectures at the Norwegian Academy of Music. “We had to play a repertoire of thousands of songs and dances right off the bat, without any rehearsal. I had never heard most of the melodies. For a classically trained musician this is a huge challenge and often very stressful.”

Alperin encompasses the cultural and music heritage in two ways. On one hand he stresses that the awareness of one’s own roots serves as a guide, and it allowed him to develop an artistic identity after years of adventuring with classical music, rock, and jazz: “I was confused. I didn’t know what really belonged to me anymore.” Thanks to returning to music of native tradition, his compositions gained a strong foundation, a centre of gravity. “It made me more relaxed, I stopped being afraid.” However, Alperin doesn’t identify heritage with just the culture of his own country, and points out that an artist should always be open to the wealth of worldwide experiences. “All folk traditions belong to one family.” The changes that took place in Alperin’s character after he moved to Norway are what the artist considers important. He describes the country as one full of poetry and stark contrast – suspended between gentleness, tranquillity, and darkness, mystery. The years spent in Norway made Alperin more introverted and withdrawn. Nevertheless, he feels southern fire burning within him. “It’s a part of me that explodes when I’m in love, when I eat a splendid dish, and when I play.”

Alperin metaphorically divides his compositions into dances and songs. “Sometimes I sing inwardly, and sometimes aloud. I never stop singing, though. I agree with Arvo Pärt, who considered the human voice to be the only perfect instrument.” Moulding his entirely own existential experience with musical experience, Alperin regards music as an expression of the personal idea of beauty which evolves and changes along with his character. However, it always remains a kind of dream world for the artists, one that allows him to express melancholy and the joy of life. “Music has always been almost the sole outlet for channelling a wide spectrum of emotions: passion, sadness… everything.” The beautiful, minimalist, and intimate music of Misha Alperin combines the emotionality of melody with crisp articulation. It amazes and pulls the listener out from their everyday life, it becomes something that demands their full attention, something that has to be heard. This is a proposition for everyone, including the most picky of music-lovers.

The concert’s program will feature original pieces by Misha Alperin, included on his recent albums.

Misha Alperin | Jazz pianist, composer, and arranger from Ukraine. Leader of Moscow Art Trio. Currently lives in Norway, is a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he teaches piano, improvisation, and composition. Has recorded 6 albums for the prestigious record company ECM. Apart from original compositions Alperin performs jazz pieces and a repertoire inspired by classical music and traditional music of eastern and Scandinavian countries. Born in 1956 in Kamianets-Podilskyi in Ukraine and raised in Bessarabia (Moldavia), where he used to play with folk musicians, simultaneously studying composition and playing the piano. In 1980 he joined Moldavian Jazz Ensemble under saxophonist and violinist Semjon Shirman. In 1983 he moved to Moscow, where he experimented by combining elements of Russian and Romanian folk music of the Moldavian region with his own subjective rendition of traditional jazz. Alperin started heading in the direction of jazz relatively late, and his searches remained less influenced by contemporary pianist and more by such masters as Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Lennie Tristano. He also drew from the Jewish musical heritage of his family. Misha Alperin’s grandfather was an author of music at a Bessarabian synagogue. The fate of the Soviet Jew became one of the themes on the album “Wave of Sorrow.” In Moscow he founded Moscow Art Trio and collaborated with the international group Huun-Huur-Tu. Since 1993 he has been living in Oslo, where he conducts lectures at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Selected discography: “Wave of Sorrow” (ECM 1990), “Prayer” (Boheme/Jaro 1991/1996), “Blue Fiords” (Boheme 1993), “Folk Dreams” (Jaro 1995), “North Story” (ECM 1997), “Mountain Tale” (Jaro 1998), “First Impression” (ECM 1999), “Portrait” (Jaro 2000), “At Home” (ECM 2001), “Night” (ECM 2002), “Instead of making children” (Jaro 2006), “Her first dance” (ECM 2008).

CURSED TERRITORY – JURIJ ANDRUCHOWYCZ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/cursed-territory-jurij-andruchowycz/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/cursed-territory-jurij-andruchowycz/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:25:58 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2153 November 2014, on the first anniversary of the Euromaidan, was when “Szcze ne wmerła i nie umrze” was published. It is Paweł Smoleński’s extensive interview with Jurij Andruchwycz, an attempt at registering the pulse of history, which now beats on the western borders of Europe. In his works (prose and essays) Andruchowycz writes down the history of Ukraine, he also asks about contemporary Europe with its arbitrary division between the East and the West. In the recently published “Zwrotnik Ukraina,” which the author edited, writers, historians, and witnesses of the Maidan events ask whether it is possible for a new Ukraine to be born, or is Ukraine becoming a victim of Russia’s imperialist dreams.

Jurij Andruchowycz | Poet, writer of prose, essayist, translator. Founder of the Bu-Ba-Bu poetry group. In 2014 Paweł Smoleński held an extensive interview with him, titled “Szcze ne wmerła i nie umrze.” He had three novels published in Poland (including “Dwanaście kręgów,” which won him the Leipzig Book Fair Award and the Angelus Central European Literature Award), tomes of essays and poetry. With the music group Karbido he has recorded the albums “Samogon,” “Cynamon,” and “Absinthe,” as well as “Andruchoid” with M. Trzaska, W. Mazolewski, and M. Moretti. Author of translations from Polish, German, and Russian. Lives in Ivano-Frankivsk.

SOLILOQUY – ANDRZEJ STASIUK http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/soliloquy-andrzej-stasiuk/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/soliloquy-andrzej-stasiuk/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:56:52 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2151 Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose, maintained in constant hesitation between truth and fiction, is a testimony of consecutive introvert journeys, where ones made in the geographical dimension become inspirations for spiritual journeys that explore memories, individual and mass memory. The writer studies the behaviours of his own consciousness in different circumstances, developing a monologue on the world with all its events, phenomena, details. In October 2015 “Kucając,” another book by Stasiuk, will be published. Fragments of prose collected in this work, full of careful thought, show us the world, in which man is only one of the many inhabitants.

Andrzej Stasiuk | Author, essayist, co-founder of the Czarne Publishing House, Artistic Director of the Zygmunt Haupt Festival. Writes for “Tygodnik Powszechny.” Has been living in the Lower Beskids since the late 80s. Has received numerous awards, including the Culture Foundation Prize, the Kościelski Foundation award, the Beata Pawlak Award, the Nike Literary Award, the Vilenica International Literary Prize, Gdynia Literary Award, the yearly literary award of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. His works have been translated to all European languages (nearly 130 translations altogether).

CARTOGRAPHY OF CONSCIOUSNESS – ANDRZEJ NIEWIADOMSKI http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/cartography-of-consciousness-andrzej-niewiadomski/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/cartography-of-consciousness-andrzej-niewiadomski/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:54:33 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2149 An opening point for this meeting will be two works by Andrzej Niewiadomski. The first one is the as of yet unpublished “K (esej podróżny),” which also includes the motif of a journey in Haupt’s footsteps. Another one is the essay “Mapa. Prolegomena” (2012). It is probably the first Polish book about a map. It is, however, not aimed at a narrow group of humanists – geography- and cartography-lovers, for it presents the map in a perspective of philosophical and theological reflection, in the perspective of history and aesthetics, in the perspective of the author’s private biography and imagination, as well as what we might call the cartographic praxis – a sphere of mutual influences between cartography and life.

Andrzej Niewiadomski, PhD | Poet, essayist, literary historian, editor. Co-founder and editor of the “Kresy” literary magazine (1989-2010). Has also done literary criticism for over 10 years. Published poetic books, and the essay book “Mapa. Prolegomena” (Lublin, 2012), and academic books, including “Jeden jest zawsze ostrzem. Inna nowoczesność Zygmunta Haupta” (Lublin 2015). He deals with the issues of poetic avant-garde, the newest poetry, metapoetry, catastrophism in the interwar period, the heritage of the interwar period in post-war literature, the dynamics of internal connections within Polish modernistic prose. His poems have been translated to English, German, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Bulgarian, and Spanish. He is director of the Modern Literature Deprtment at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University Lublin.

ATLAS ESTREMO – JURIJ ANDRUCHOWYCZ & KARBIDO http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/atlas-estremo-jurij-andruchowycz-karbido-2/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/atlas-estremo-jurij-andruchowycz-karbido-2/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:52:46 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2147 “ATLAS ESTREMO” – that is the title of the new project by JURIJ ANDRUCHOWYCZ, the first laureate of the “Angelus,” and the Wrocław-based group KARBIDO. This literary-musical spectacle had its premiere during the international ArtPole Festival in Unizh (Ukraine). As opposed to previous projects by Andruchowycz and Karbido, recorded on the albums “Samogon,” “Absynt,” and “Cynamon,” this time the lyrical layer for the Ukrainian singer’s melodeclamation is comprised of prose from “Leksykon miast intymnych” instead of his own poetry. Out of scraps of his writings, unfinished sentences and phrases, Andruchowycz creates a kind if poetic collage. The music made by Karbido is also different from their previous projects. The artists abandon the aesthetics of a post-rock poetic spectacle. This time around the music is more raw and minimal.

2015 marks a decade of cooperation between Karbido and Andruchowycz, the closing of the “Samogon – Cynamon – Absynt” trilogy, and historic changes currently taking place in Ukraine, ones that we cannot ignore – these are the origins of the new project inspired by Andruchowycz’s book “Leksykon intymnych mist.” The author’s aim was to translate the energy and atmosphere of the cities described there, as well as the commentary regarding them, into the language of sonic expression.

Rich, sensual, full of memories, it is a story about the riches of the temporal world, a story which begins nowhere and ends in the same place.

Krzysztof Varga | Has made it to the finals of the Nike Literary Award three times – for his books “Tequila,” “Nagrobek z lastryko,” and “Gulasz z turula.” His recently published works include: “Trociny” (2012) and “Czardasz z mangalicą” (2014). He is also author of the essayist prose “Bildungsroman” (1997, 2014) and the volume of prose “45 pomysłów na powieść” (1998, 2014), for which he has been awarded by Fundacja Kultury. THE BACK SIDE OF THINGS – BARBARA KLICKA http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/in-the-medium-of-poetry-the-back-side-of-things-barbara-klicka/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/in-the-medium-of-poetry-the-back-side-of-things-barbara-klicka/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:27:58 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2141 “’Nice’ is, contrary to what may often seem – a Polish, non-masculine noun. So a piece of writing or speaking which answers the questions: ‘who? what?’. The book ‘nice’ also wanted to give me answers to similar questions, which seems to mean that she’d like to be a noun. A non-masculine one. Talking about the back side of things. It doesn’t have to mean that it cannot be nice. Though very often if means exactly that.”| Barbara Klicka

Barbara Klicka | Poet, animator of culture. In 2012 published the volume “same same,” which was nominated for the Silesius Poetry Award. In 2015 her tome “Nice” was published. Her texts have been translated to different languages, including English and German.

ZYGMUNT HAUPT. WORLDVIEW http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/zygmunt-haupt-worldview/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/zygmunt-haupt-worldview/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2015 18:22:42 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=2139 We will pose a question about the view of the world, about how it emerges from his work, and we will bring up some of its themes: existential topics, the feeling of displacement, the Kresy experiences, borderlands, experiences of war, the epistemological helplessness against worldly chaos, modernity as a time of unification and standardisation, the inadequacy of language and metaphor, language as Paradise Lost, the conviction that art constitutes the highest good, and the non-continuity of the world (the conviction that the story cannot be fully told) as the determinant of a narrative (patchwork, non-linearity, fragmentariness, digression, multivocality, dissonance, archaisms, syntactic lapse, addressing the reader), multi-layered narrative, shape memory, “the art of permeation,” between poetry and “prattle” or the vernacular.
