LABORATORIUM PIEŚNI
The group uses traditional, polyphonic singing. They perform Ukrainian, Balkan, Polish, and Belarussian songs, as well as Georgian and Scandinavian ones, and many other. They sing the songs of the world a cappella, as well as with shaman drums and other ethnic instruments (such as the shruti box, bells, percussion, flute, kalimba, bowl, gong), introducing into traditional songs a new ground for vocal improvisation, often intuitive, wild, feminine, inspired by the sounds of nature. The source material undergoes a journey of sorts: the songs are usually brought from different regions of Poland, Europe, and the world by group members, then they are being worked on during a workshop process and on rehearsals to finally get its new shape – one that is traditional or one that is enriched, re-arranged. The band has received the Triton Award for the greatest artistic personality of the Festival at Fama (Świnoujście).
A band of female singers from Tricity, performing in their current constellation since 2013. Laboratorium Pieśni, apart from singing, also conducts field research in order to find new-old music (research conducted until now: Albania – polyphonic songs, Kashubia – funeral songs, Lower Silesia – rituals of carol singers). The group also creates theatre performances, where through traditional songs they tell stories about vanishing rites. The group’s founders – Alina Jurczyszyn, who graduated from the “Gardzienice” Academy for Theatre Practices, and Kamila Bigus, who graduated from the Academy of Music in Gdańsk – are realising the “Akademia Laboratorium Pieśni” project at the University of Gdańsk, and also conduct other traditional singing workshops in other locations. Laboratorium Pieśni is the co-organiser of the Etnowiosnowisko Spring and Music Festival.
